Chapter 1

Mr. Harper’s swimming pool

From Crazy Croc and the Great Hamburger Robbery, by Simon Jones and Sophie Amphlett

The crocodiles in Mr. Harper’s swimming pool

Mr. Harper had always looked forward to the weekends. But that all changed one Friday night when he came home after a long, dull week at the office to find three crocodiles swimming around in his pool.

After the first time it didn't happen again for a while. But then they came back. Soon his swimming pool had three crocodiles in it on most weekends. And then one of them started swimming in his pool almost every day.

It irritated him so much that he couldn't use the pool when he wanted to – even though he never went in it very much – that it made his life a misery.

Now it was Saturday morning and Mr. Harper only had a few hours to relax because he had to make a business trip in his ancient Cadillac to Jacksonville.

Normally, when he woke up on a Saturday morning the first thing Mr. Harper did was to go straight to the fridge and make himself one of the world's biggest sandwiches. But those happy days had disappeared. Nowadays he headed straight for the TV room to look out at the swimming pool. Not for the first time he saw something he didn't like.

There was a very big crocodile lying on one of his sun loungers and a little croc swimming around in the pool wearing a Cubs baseball cap. Mr. Harper went to the end window and yanked it open.

“What do you think you're doing, croc?" he shouted. "This is private property!"

The big crocodile opened his large eyes and looked at him thoughtfully.

"Just relaxing, Mr. Harper. Just keeping the lounger warm for you," he replied.

Mr. Harper, who was a large, fat man, unwisely tried to put his head out of the window so he could shout at the crocodiles a bit louder. But his head was rather big and the window was rather small and so his head got stuck in it.
